FLEMINGTON MARKETS “Lovely caulies, c’mon ladies,” they shout. “ Boxes of lemons $8 – come and get them.” The Saturday market at Flemington may lack the romance of a European street market or the charm of village market in Asia or the Pacific, but few places on earth can match the sheer range of produce available here – everything from sacks of spuds to trays of artichoke, boxes of navel oranges, mountains of glossy eggplants and neat stacks of rhubarb. Small wonder some of Sydney’s best chefs – as well as almost all of Strathfield’s – come here for their produce. There will hardly be a plate tonight without something from this massive arena of fresh food. Apart from fruit, veg and herbs the markets also have a fresh seafood section and a long meat counter, selling mostly free-range chicken, ducks, quail and rabbit. Flemington is the cheapest place in Sydney to buy eggs. Several stalls are devoted to these little gems, with prices as low as $6 for a tray of 24; that’s enough to make a whopping omelette or share with egg-loving friends. The markets also offer a good selection of European dry goods, such as pasta, tinned tomatoes and bottled olives and artichoke. And check out the spice stall near the poultry section – it has the freshest ground spices you’ll find, plus specialist Indian and Moroccan mixes. Given the noise, immense size and frenetic activity here, it’s easy to become a little overwhelmed on your first expedition to the produce market, so pace yourself. After making your initial circuit, stop for a coffee and plan your next move. And always hire a trolley – you’ll need it to get your boxes of cut-price mangoes, lemons, grapefruit, mandarins and apples back to our new Kia Rio, a nippy little hatchback combining European flair, Australian drivability and Korean spice – perhaps a metaphor for the markets themselves, with their heady mix of exotic fruits alongside European and Australian staples. HOMEBUSH WEST Having filled the boot with fresh fruit and veg – and maybe a whole snapper or two – we head down Parramatta Road to Homebush West, a little village with a big Asian foodie heart. First stop is Tan Hung Long Supermarket for dried noodles, soy sauce, green curry paste and pad thai sauce – all of which comes to the princely sum of $8.90. Just down the alleyway is the KW BBQ Shop, with a brace of glistening Peking ducks in the window. Inside a man is dismembering a duck, wielding his cleaver with surgical precision. The little shop sells whole barbecue chicken, duck and fish – or pick up a chicken and rice snack, with broth and gai lan, for just $7.
